While exploring the Vatican Museums, you have the rare opportunity
slip behind velvet ropes to visit the original helical Bramante Staircase.
Usually closed to the public, it was once the entrance from street level
to the Papal apartments built to accommodate a horse and carriage to
carry the Pope home. Today, it offers one of the best views over the
Rome cityscape.
You will also discover some of the other galleries with their prestigious
collections such as the pagan sculptures in the Gallery of the
Candelabra, see the incredibly accurate medieval geography in the
Gallery of the Maps, and marvel at the optical illusions in the Gallery of
the Tapestries.
Another highlight is the unmissable Raphael Rooms which was once the
private apartments of Pope Julius II della Rovere with frescoes executed
by Raphael and his school.
Then off to the Sistine Chapel, famous for the best views of the
legendary frescoes by Michelangelo and other Florentine masters
where your guide will take you on a historical journey recounting the
stories behind the art (like the punishment Michelangelo envisioned for
his enemies).
With Skip-the-Line Access directly from the Sistine Chapel, you will gain
immediate entry to St. Peter’s Basilica where your guide will show you
around one of Christendom’s most sacred monuments. Erected atop a
4th-century church, it contains stunning masterworks including
Michelangelo’s Pietà and soaring dome based on the famous Duomo in
Florence.
After the tour you will have free time to explore more on your own
making the most of your time in the Vatican City State within the Eternal
City.
